CASE STUDY 4: NEWSROUND AND BBC AFFILIATES



1) How does Newsround use the key conventions of TV news?
Newsround uses text-on-screen to give information to the viewers that is not shown in the report, as well as this they use piece-to-camera to give extra information and introduce a new segment of the report, video packages and graphics to keep their young audience engaged.
2) Who are the presenters for BBC Newsround? Why do Newsround have a variety of presenters?
The presenters of Newsround are Martin Dougan, Leah Bolleto, Jenny Lawrence, Ayshah Tull, Hayley Halsall, Ricky Boleto
3) Are any other presenters or reporters used?
Yes, but they do not mention them on the website and some are Citzen Journalist or One off4) What does the studio look like? How is technology used in programme?
Studio colour scheme is quite colourful, and the technology is quite advanced they use things like their website and USG.5) What is the opening sequence to Newsround? Does it fit the key conventions of TV news?
The opening sequence of Newsround includes their logo and other graphics to compliment it all in the same colour scheme. They use key conventions such as, Graphics, Music and their logo. It could have fitted the theme of Newsround even more if they added small sized video packages.6) How does Newsround typically present a news story? (E.g. presenter to camera, reporter on location, interviews, graphics, images, video etc.)
A typical Newsround story is  relevant, has a local angle and engaging. There is usually a short PTC as it may bore the audience, so reports mainly contain video packages with voiceovers and sometimes short interviews but it is quite untypical news thing that they do is they lay music in the back of their videos.  They also use a platform for them to interact and advertise it at the end of every report7) Who is the target audience for Newsround? You may want to research this online.
Newsround has a target audience of 6 to 12-year-olds and probably in ABC1 class students with a 2 working parents8) Is there an opportunity for the audience to get involved in the programme? Do young people feature in the news programme at all?
Yes, there is in specialised reports or reports mainly focused or going to affect the audience, for example changes in school tution fees or general election. They also are used to better the bulletins and create stories
